MARCO ISLAND, Fla. — It’s the return of the flies. Swarms of black flies that appear every few years have been a nuisance on the island for the last several days. Hundreds of the insects covered island resident Bonnie Wimer’s lanai, she said. Some found their way through a broken screen. “We’d wake up in the morning and the tile would be black,” she said. The Environmental Specialist for the City of Marco Island and the Marco Island Police Department have received numerous complaints, prompting police to tweet a warning to beachgoers. RCD calls regarding black fly on beach. Possibly linked to warm winter followed by big rain.
