PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Surrounded by balloons, cakes and a loving community, a Port Charlotte couple celebrated a marriage milestone Wednesday — their 70th wedding anniversary. Jack Maschue still remembers the second he laid eyes on his wife, Betty. “This girl comes out of the other room, and I said, ‘Who is that?'” Maschue said. A year and a half ago, Betty suffered a stroke that forced her to move to Consulate Health Care of Port Charlotte, a residential care facility. But Jack’s children take him to visit her every day. “I know how hard it is to lay down and stare at the wall, so I give her a chance to stare at me a little bit and she seems to enjoy it,” Maschue said. Jack Maschue’s son, John, described their relationship as a “true love story.” The nursing home also surprised the couple with hot dogs — the meal they had on their first date.
