Naples police search for ‘distraction burglars’

NAPLES, Fla. — “Distraction” burglars have been targeting the elderly in Collier and Broward counties, the Naples Police Department said.

Distraction burglary is what happens with one criminal approaches a residence and distracts the homeowner while another goes inside to commit the crime.

Jack Thomas and his wife, Midge, on Tuesday became the latest victims of the third distraction burglary in the city of Naples since Dec. 22.

Midge Thomas said two men came to their house posing as plumbers and asked to examine a faucet. While one helped her, the other stole her jewelry, including a $500 ring, police said.

“Some research on their part indicated we were elderly and perhaps gullible,” Jack Thomas said.

Another attempted distraction burglary took place Monday in Naples.

“The homeowner caught on and thought the individual was acting suspicious and ran them out of the house,” said Naples Police Lt. Seth Finman.

The Naples Police Department is working with sheriff’s offices in Collier and Broward counties to capture the burglars.

Detectives provided tips for residents to prevent distraction burglaries:

  • Workers who come to your door should have appointments and proper uniforms.
  • Ask to see identification that shows the worker is affiliated with a reputable organization.
  • If you notice anything suspicious, contact the police.
