FORT MYERS, Fla. — A Tice man has been convicted of attempted second-degree murder and child abuse for shooting his wife in the face in front of a 5-year-old girl in 2015, court officials said.

Ygnacio Sanchez, 52, was arrested the morning after the Sept. 20, 2015 shooting of his wife, Petra, at a home on the 300 block of Bellair Road. The scene played out in front of a girl whom Petra was babysitting, according to Petra’s daughter-in-law Krystal Ortiz.

Sanchez was drunk the day he opened fire, Ortiz said. Witnesses said they heard three gunshots and saw a woman on the ground bleeding. Petra lost an eye and underwent multiple surgeries.

A Lee County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was called after Sanchez barricaded himself in the home after the shooting. He surrendered following a standoff.
