Collier commissioners reject latest plan to woo Atlanta Braves

Published: Updated:

NAPLES, Fla. — It’s another strike against the chances of the Atlanta Braves holding spring training in Southwest Florida.

Collier County commissioners voted Tuesday to reject a proposal for a $100 million stadium in the City Gate area east of Collier Boulevard and north of Interstate 75. The commission also rejected a similar proposal earlier this year.

The construction would have been funded by the state, a slight increase in tourist taxes and the team, which has considered leaving its current spring headquarters at Disney Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando. Commissioners said Tuesday the tax increase would be too burdensome over time.
