SOUTH FORT MYERS, Fla. — The remains of a 4-month-old Florida panther were found Thursday morning near Southwest Florida International Airport, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said.

The discovery was made on Paul J. Doherty Parkway, close to Daniels Parkway. The panther was hit by a car, according to the FWC.

The Florida panther is an endangered animal, and the number of deaths continues to surge. This is the 40th death in the state this year, a new record. Records were also set in 2014 and 2015.
