IMMOKALEE, Fla. — A 20-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday after a man overdosed on heroin while in a car with the woman’s son, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office said.

Jordyn Demere, of Everglades City, is facing charges of drug possession and child neglect after 24-year-old Robert Huggins was found with Demere’s 1-year-old son in the backseat.

Collier County Sheriff’s detectives had prior knowledge the pair were involved in possible drug activity and conducted an investigation. They saw the two sitting in a blue Ford F-250 for 15 minutes in a parking lot outside of a Seminole Hard Rock Casino.

Demere then left and walked into an area known for high drug activity, the sheriff’s office said. She returned 20 minutes later.

Detectives approached the truck when they saw her leaning over Huggins. That’s when they noticed Huggins was overdosing and called EMS crews.

While this was happening, detectives noticed Demere’s son was sweating heavily and that drugs were within arm’s reach of the boy.

Deputies took the boy into their air-conditioned patrol car and the Department of Children and Families has been contacted.

Huggins was transported to North Collier Hospital. His condition remains unclear.

A K-9 search uncovered drugs and used syringes in the Ford.

Demere is currently in custody with no bond set.
