Mental health issues plague Florida jails

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — A third of the inmates at Charlotte County Jail have some sort of mental health issue, highlighting a statewide problem.

Florida lags behind other states in mental health spending, and 125,000 people with mental illnesses are incarcerated each year in Florida. That’s led to questions about whether inmates are getting proper care.
