PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Two people died in a crash at 2:30 a.m. Monday near the intersection of U.S. Route 41 and Harbor Boulevard, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Wesley Chery, 21, of Port Charlotte, and Brittany Beni, 21, of Port Charlotte, were both killed. Chery was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, the FHP said.

The right lane of U.S. Route 41 northbound was closed, but has reopened. The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office and FHP are on scene investigating the single-vehicle wreck.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area during the investigation, according to a CCSO advisory message.

Speed is being considered in the investigation, according to the FHP. It is unclear whether alcohol was a factor in this crash.

After coming in contact with a drainage ditch on the east shoulder of U.S. Route 41, the car went airborne, hit a roadway sign and a tree, and then landed in the Animal Clinic parking lot on 3300 Tamiami Trail, the FHP said.

Here is a live look from the scene of the deadly crash.
