Abigail the Pit recovering after major dogfight injuries

ESTERO, Fla. – A 3-year-old pit bull is recovering from injuries she sustained to her face and ear as a bait dog in suspected dogfighting in Miami.

Abigail received a skin graft on Nov. 23 and has been placed into a foster home. She is still recovering and her medical bills are expected to reach $18,000.

Victoria Frazier, the dog’s foster parent, said Abigail has inspired international attention.

“From Indonesia, England, France — all over the world — it’s been really cool to have these supports with us on her journey,” Frazier said. “Everywhere we go now, everybody knows. We went to PetSmart, Lowe’s, several different stores and people stopped us and said, ‘I know her story.'”

Now Abigail is memorable for another reason, too. She wears bright-colored bonnets that cover her badly injured ear.

“Her bonnets just make her personality. She’s just so bubbly and jumpy and giddy and happy,” Frazier said.

Frazier hopes Abigail’s newfound popularity will give a face to the victims of dogfighting.

“It brings awareness to what dogfighting looks like. It brings awareness to people who didn’t even know it existed,” Frazier said.

Abigail’s Estero-based pet rescue group, Love is Furever, isn’t accepting applications for her adoption because she has a long road to full recovery. But you can catch her and Santa on Dec. 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pets First Wellness Center at 9220 Estero Park Commons Blvd #6’s holiday event.
