FORT MYERS, Fla. – Two people were injured and one person killed in a shooting near the Gulf Coast Town Center early Saturday morning, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said.

Marcus Hood, 28, died at the hospital, deputies said. His death is being investigated as a homicide, according to LCSO.

Deputies are at multiple locations investigating what they initially called an “overnight incident.”

Ben Hill Griffin Parkway was closed between Alico Road and the Miromar Footbridge around 7 a.m., but subsequently reopened before 8:30 a.m.

Some nearby residents like Jerry Monley are surprised by what happened.

“I think its crazy,” Monley said. “I think anytime there’s a shooting in local areas, you know either people aren’t being responsible with guns or something’s wrong.”

However, Keith Meyer, who also lives near the shooting, said he wasn’t shocked.

“Well, sadly you kinda hear a lot of these things pretty much on a regular basis,” he said. “However, usually it’s more confined closer to downtown Fort Myers.”

There are other parts of Alico Road, Ben Hill Griffin Parkway and Treeline Road where deputies and detectives are investigating, Lt. Jeff Dektas said.

Crime scene tape was also seen at Gulf Coast Town Center near GQ’z Boutique.

Deputies said the public is not in danger.

No further information was immediately available.
