SANIBEL, Fla. – A 49-year-old man was arrested and is facing attempted homicide charges for allegedly shooting a Sanibel police officer in the shoulder Sunday night.

The officer, Jarred Ciccone, was in his vehicle working a traffic stop near 2300 Periwinkle Way when the suspect, Sanibel resident Jon Webster Hay, drove by and opened fire, retired Sanibel Police Chief Bill Tomlinson said.

Hay then drove to The Dunes neighborhood, where he exchanged gunfire with officers, before fleeing to his home at 1476 Sand Castle Road in Sanibel.

Hay was taken into custody early Monday morning.
