FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) – A South Florida woman has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2014 shooting death of a Miami police officer who was her boyfriend.

The Sun Sentinel reports that 48-year-old Tiniko Thompson was sentenced Friday. She was convicted in August of second-degree murder.

Prosecutors say Thompson shot 43-year-old Carl Patrick because he wanted to end their relationship and expose her for faking a pregnancy to stay together. Thompson’s attorney had argued she fired in self-defense.

Trial evidence showed that Thompson wrapped the uniformed Patrick in a blanket and drove off in his BMW. She left a note calling the shooting an accident. His body was discovered two days later in Pembroke Pines.

Patrick was a 25-year veteran of the Miami Police Department.
