Collier man arrested for child neglect after toddler was found unresponsive

EAST NAPLES, Fla. — A Naples father was arrested Wednesday after a toddler was found unresponsive on the floor, according to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office.

Nicholas Salvani, 38, was discovered unconscious on the kitchen floor Tuesday with his head in a cupboard by a friend who was checking on him. Salvani’s three-year-old daughter was also passed out nearby.

Salvani is being accused of child neglect and was taken into custody while his daughter was transported to NCH North for emergency medical attention, police reports confirm. She is currently in stable condition.

Stephanie Tomkins, 27, who found Salvani and called 911, told police she babysits for him because of his drug problem. She stated she felt something was wrong after speaking to Salvani on the phone Tuesday. She continued to call throughout the day to check in, but he never answered.

Tomkins then later drove to Salvani’s house and broke through the back door when nobody responded to the front door.

Investigators said the home had no power and the conditions were deplorable. Feces and urine littered the floor and drug paraphernalia was spotted on the kitchen table.

A dog was also found lying on the bed in a pool of urine. The animal was eventually taken into custody, according to police reports.

Neighbors like Sharon were shocked and had nothing but kind words to say about Salvani.

“He has had his little girl since she was born,” Sharon said. “He is outstanding. He brings her out and plays with her, takes her to the park.”

Sharon also told WINK News Salvani was depressed because he was recently laid off.

Salvani was transported to the Naples Jail Center and is facing a charge of child neglect with great bodily harm.
