Company responsible for Charlotte gas leaks fired by county

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — The company responsible for two recent Charlotte County gas line breaks has been fired, Charlotte County spokesman Brian Gleason said.

Thee gas line breaks, which occurred Oct. 19 and Oct. 20, caused heavy traffic from Kings Highway to Midland Boulevard. County officials concluded that  J&D Cable of Largo faltered in the $26 million project, the Charlotte Sun said.

While Jeff Keysner, the Charlotte County public works engineer, said he didn’t question the original work ethic of the company, the county felt two consecutive gas line breaks were unacceptable.

Cherie Jacobs, a spokesperson for Tampa Electric and TECO Peoples Gas, confirmed the likelihood that companies like J&D Cable of Largo could be at fault for these types of incidents.

“In each of those events, the gas leaks were caused by construction contractors who damaged our lines,” Jacobs wrote in an email. “In fact, the No. 1 cause of gas leaks is third parties, such as construction crews, damaging our lines.”

No further information regarding the status of the project was immediately available.
