CAPE CORAL, Fla. — The 911 calls a Cape Coral mother made earlier this week after her son stabbed his stepfather have been released.

Derek Hartsfield, 31, allegedly tried to murder Walter Dawson, his 55-year-old stepfather, by stabbing him in the throat with a knife at their home on the 1000 block of Southwest 15th Place, the Cape Coral Police Department said.

Judi Dawson, Hartsfield’s mother, ran into the bathroom and locked herself inside to call police after Hartsfield attacked her.

“He’s trying to open up the door that’s locked,” Judi Dawson said to the dispatcher. “He’s out of control.”

Hartsfield ended up breaking through the door and resumed hitting her. Once he stopped, she ran outside.

Walter Dawson survived the attack and is recovering in the hospital.

Hartsfield is currently in custody facing attempted murder charges.
