Lee County man arrested in connection to fatal Cape Coral wreck

FORT MYERS, Fla. — A North Fort Myers man was arrested Friday in connection to a fatal Cape Coral car crash that occurred in April, according to the Cape Coral  Police Department.

Michael Getts, 35, is facing manslaughter charges after allegedly crashing into Francis George Paulette III, 19, killing Lonnie Retherford, 36, who was a passenger in Getts’ car.

Getts and Retherford were driving on NE Pine Island Road and Getts had been drinking beforehand. While trying to change lanes, Getts struck Paulette’s car, forcing both cars off the road and into a ditch.

The cars eventually caught on fire. Cape Coral Police and a passerby helped extricate the victims from their cars.

All three victims were transported to Lee Memorial Health, but Retherford was the only fatality.

Getts is being charged with the following crimes:
• DUI manslaughter
• Vehicular manslaughter
• DUI Causing Personal injury
• DUI Causing Property Damage
• DUI with BAC Over 0.150

Getts is currently in custody with no bond set.
