Car dealerships sell flood-damaged cars from Hurricane Matthew

Published: Updated:

NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Better Business Bureau is warning car shoppers about purchasing used cars as they may be flood-damaged from Hurricane Matthew.

Mark Milstein, the general sales manager at Southern Trust Auto Outlet in North Fort Myers, advises customers to look for these warning signs when trying to spot serious water damage:

• Check carpets and seats for any smell of mildew
• Check electronics to make sure they’re working properly
• Check underneath the car for any signs of rust

Customers can also request the CARFAX report. However, recent water damage doesn’t always appear in the reports and not every car dealership has CARFAX reports.

Shoppers tricked into buying a damaged car can receive help from the bank if the car was financed.
