Woman sentenced in failed cocaine cruise ship smuggle plot

ORLANDO, Fla. – A Washington D.C. woman will serve eight years in jail for plotting to smuggle more than six kilograms of cocaine from Jamaica into the United States, the Department of Justice announced Thursday.

Lakisha Abney, 33, worked with three other women to hide the cocaine in their undergarments, which was how they got the drugs off the island and onto a cruise ship in May, the DOJ said. But they were caught by U.S. Customs and Border Protection when officers discovered the cocaine in their bras and underwear, according to the DOJ.

Abney pleaded guilty to conspiracy to import cocaine into the U.S. in July, the DOJ said.

The other women, Shawnta Aiken, Ciera Bryant, and Shenique Milbourne, were each sentenced to about two years in federal prison.
