NORTH NAPLES, Fla. — A 20-year-old man on a skateboard suffered serious injuries when he was hit by a car while crossing Immokalee Road at Airport-Pulling Boulevard around 4:30 p.m., the Collier County Sheriff’s Office said.

The skateboarder, Naples resident Dylan Benfield, was flown to Lee Memorial Hospital after the collision. His condition is unknown, though he was alert enough to tell Florida Highway Patrol officials he saw a “walk” signal before crossing the road.

Naples resident Elena Zehnder, 27, was driving the Volkswagen hatchback that struck him. It’s unclear if she’s facing any charges, but she told Florida Highway Patrol she had a green light.

Benfield was using a crosswalk when he was hit but wasn’t wearing a helmet, FHP said.

A deputy arrived on scene quickly seconds after the crash took place. The intersection is open to traffic, FHP said.

Witnesses are asked to call Christopher Rowley of FHP at 239-938-1800.
