Bromeliads safe for now from Zika-inspired removal

Published: Updated:

FORT MYERS, Fla. – With concern for the spread of the Zika virus, some flower enthusiasts are asking whether bromeliad flowers will be removed from Lee County.

The plants were ripped out of Miami communities fighting the virus because they contain pockets that fill with standing water, which is the breeding ground for Zika-carrying mosquitoes. But so far, Lee County officials are not recommending the plants be eradicated.
