Obama to speak at opening of African-American Museum

WASHINGTON (AP/CBS) – The Smithsonian Institution says President Barack Obama will speak at the opening ceremony of the National Museum of African American History and Culture this month.

First Lady Michelle Obama, former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, and Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts will also be attending the Sept. 24 ceremony. Civil rights icon John Lewis, now a Georgia congressman, will also be there.

Jazz musician Wynton Marsalis will perform a special composition he created for the event at the new museum on the National Mall in Washington.

The Smithsonian says the event will also include readings of African-American literature.

“CBS This Morning” will broadcast live from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. Monday, Sept. 12, becoming the first media outlet to broadcast live from the museum prior to its public opening on Sept. 24.
