CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Two law enforcement officers were taken to Lee Memorial Hospital with injuries they suffered in a vehicle crash at Santa Barbara Boulevard and Tropicana Parkway shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday, a Cape Coral Police Department spokesperson said.

Cape Coral Police Department officers Jason Sprague and Paul Martin are in serious condition, a Florida Highway Patrol official said. They were in an unmarked Ford Crown Victoria, according to the Cape Coral police spokesperson.

Northbound traffic on Santa Barbara is blocked between Pine Island Road and Tropicana. Travelers are advised to take Andalusia or Chiquita boulevards instead.

The collision appears to have taken place when a 2004 Jeep Laredo going at least 45 mph rear-ended the Crown Victoria while it was stationary at a stop sign, authorities said. The driver of Laredo, 53-year-old Dean Edward Gage of Arcadia, was taken to Cape Coral Hospital with minor injuries, according to FHP.

Charges are pending an investigation, FHP said.
