Advisory issued at North Shore Park due to risk of bacteria-borne illness

Published: Updated:

NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. – The state health department in Lee County is advising people to stay out of the water at North Shore Park after tests results showed high levels of a bacteria that causes diarrhea and stomach pains.

The beach park, located at 13001 N. Cleveland Ave. is mostly used for boating and fishing, but the health department is prohibiting swimming in the area. Aug. 25 test results showed high levels of Enterococcus bacteria, which is naturally found in humans’ intestines. That bacteria in the water presents the risk of disease.

The advisory will continue indefinitely or once bacteria levels reach an appropriate level. New test results will be released Aug. 30, health officials said.
