CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Investigators have upgraded a death investigation to the city’s fifth homicide of the year.

Dayvin K. Johnson, 39, was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound, Cape Coral police said.

Officers responded to 1216 NE 23rd Terrace in response to a “suspicious circumstances call” at about 1:20 a.m.

The department said the shooting was not random “and do not believe there is a danger to the general public,” but did not say if a suspect was in custody or if a person of interest was being questioned.

Investigators have not said if Johnson’s body was found inside or outside the residence, nor did they detail where Johnson was shot.

Sheila Sweeney, who lives near the home, said she heard a loud sound at about midnight, but wasn’t sure if it was gunshots or vehicle backfire.

“While i got up my husband was running out back to see what was going on, if it was something out back because it was so loud,” she said. “And yeah, when i got up this morning the crime scene tape was there.”

Neighbor Rolf Maurer said he also heard what sounded like multiple gunshots.

“Very fast three or four shots and then quiet, and in the middle of the night the police came,” he said.
