FORT MYERS, Fla. – Multiple callers warned authorities about a wrong-driver moments before a horrific crash claimed the life of 34-year-old Anne Shifley near mile marker 132 on Interstate-75, recordings of 9-1-1 caiis released Wednesday reveal.

“There’s a green Ford Explorer heading north on the southbound I-75, just north of Daniels,” one woman said. “The guy was in the far left hand lane going like it was no big deal.”

The woman placed her call at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7.

Other calls came in, too.

“I seen a guy go the wrong way on I-75,” a man is heard saying.

Three minutes later officials with the Florida Highway Patrol said Brian Canfield, 46, slammed head-on into Shifley.

“Well, the two of them crashed into each other and now they’re like — Well, one of them is completely shattered,” a caller told dispatchers.

Shifley died at the scene. But before she passed, Tristan Matot ran to her side.

“I moved her hair from her face and then I took her heartbeat again from her neck. It was very faint and then I just put my hand on her and I just started praying ’cause I knew it was time for her,” Matot said.

Canfield was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. He is in fair condition, Lee Memorial Hospital officials said Wednesday.

FHP is still investigating the crash. It is unknown how Canfield ended up driving north in the southbound lanes and the agency is still waiting for the results from his toxicology reports.

Cameras along the highway do not record their livestreams and have proven useless to the investigation.
