CAPE CORAL, Fla. — One person is dead following a crash near the 4700 block of Del Prado Boulevard at Southeast 47th Terrace, Cape Coral police said. Two vehicles were involved the crash Tuesday morning. One driver was transported with unknown injuries sustained in the crash, the other driver, identified as 52-year-old Laurence Kavanaugh, is deceased, police said. Several witnesses say they heard a gunshot before police arrived. A bullet also hit a police officer in the chest, but he was wearing a bulletproof vest and will be OK, authorities said. The wreck left shattered glass and blocked the intersection of Del Prado and Southeast 47th Terrace for about two hours until the roads reopened shortly before noon.
