Police shoot Okeechobee man suspected of killing wife

OKEECHOBEE, Fla. — Police shot a murder suspect multiple times after he gunned down his wife and tried to flee from authorities, neighbors and witnesses said.

The Okeechobee County Sheriff’s office confirmed the officer-involved shooting that took place Friday evening. Neighbors told CBS affiliate WPEC-TV that the man, David Anthony Schwendenmann, fled after shooting and killing his wife at about 5 p.m. in the Larkee Lakes mobile home park on Southeast 58th Drive near Okeechobee.

Witnesses told the station that deputies tried to stop him by putting down stop sticks to flatten his tires on U.S. 441 two miles away. What happened next is not entirely clear.

No officers were hurt, the sheriff’s office said. The suspect was taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce. His name and condition have not been released.
