LABELLE, Fla. — Off-duty Glades County Sheriff’s Office deputy James Naso was killed when the motorcycle he was driving collided with a truck Thursday night on State Road 29 near County Road 832, Florida Highway Patrol said.

Naso’s Honda CBR 100 was headed southbound and veered into the northbound lane, according to FHP. The driver of the Peterbilt truck, 28-year-old Jose Sanchez of LaBelle, swerved to avoid him but was unable to do so.

The collision hurled Naso off the motorcycle and into a water-filled canal on the west side of State Road 29, FHP said. Sanchez was unhurt.

An investigation into whether alcohol was a factor is pending, FHP said.
