VIDEO: Arcadia police officer’s quick actions save boy’s life

ARCADIA, Fla.- It was June 2014 when SJ Fales’ mother rushed him to the hospital.

The baby, born with a heart defect, had already stopped breathing three times that day.

“I was going to lose my only child, here we are after everything we’ve gone through, and I’m losing him,” Jaime Fales recalled.

She called 911 on the way to the hospital. Arcadia Police Department Officer Robert McVey located Fales a short time later and using his patrol car’s lights and sirens to lead the way.

When they arrived, the officer leapt into action.

“I still had the car in drive and he dove into the car and had him and all his monitors and was in the hospital before I could even get the car in park,” Fales said. “He actually kept his heart beating to get him into the hospital.”

McVey and SJ reunited several months later, after the baby was diagnosed with leukemia.

“I was just doing my job, doing what I was trained to do,” McVey said recalling the experience.

Fast forward to today, after spending the last few months in Nebraska battling leukemia, doctors declared now 2-year-old SJ cancer free.

“I’m proud of him, he’s such a fighter,” McVey said. “I’m amazed that such a small boy could be such a fighter.”

SJ’s family currently owes around $3 million in medical bills. The family is accepting donations on their GoFundMe page to help cover the expenses.
