Crews battle Punta Gorda house fire

Published: Updated:

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — Crews are investigating a fire that engulfed a two-story wooden home on the 12000 block of Green Gulf Boulevard, a Charlotte County spokesperson said.

The fire, which started around 8 a.m., was under control as of 10 a.m. No one was home when the blaze broke out, the spokesperson said. A passer-by who noticed large flames shooting out of the house alerted authorities to the fire.

No fire hydrants are on the street, so it took longer than it might otherwise would have to contain the blaze, officials said. The roof and windows sustained extensive damage, though no estimate is immediately available.

The state fire marshal has been called in to assist the investigation.
