MIAMI (AP) – Officials say travel is up at Miami International Airport despite losing some passenger traffic from the airport’s top international market – Brazil.

WFOR-TV reports airport officials said Monday that passenger traffic is up by 3 percent within the first six months of 2016. That means that 22.6 million travelers have gone through the airport in that time.

Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio T. Gonzalez called the growth “significant,” considering the airport’s major decrease in travel from Brazil due to the country’s struggling economy. It is unclear how much passenger traffic from Brazil dropped.

Domestic travelers went up by 5 percent while international travelers rose by 1 percent so far.

The airport experienced a record year of 8-percent growth in 2015.

He says that more growth is expected this year with the airport’s peak winter season traffic coming up.
