Thief steals Mercedes, crashes car on Midpoint Bridge

CAPE CORAL, Fla.- A thief stole a Mercedes and crashed the vehicle near the 2300 block of Veterans Parkway East early Wednesday morning before abandoning the scene, Cape Coral police said.

“Big surprise… they wake you up in the middle of the night and tell you your car’s gone!” said 78-year-old Jerry Krug, the owner of the stolen Mercedes. “I couldn’t believe it, I thought we were in a gated community and I thought ‘well that can’t be right.'”

Krug says he last saw his car Tuesday night when he left it unlocked in his community’s parking garage.

“I told the tow truck driver, it just makes you sick seeing that,” Krug said. “Such a beautiful car, gone.”

The driver of the other car involved in the crash told authorities he was struck from behind on the Midpoint Bridge and saw the Mercedes flip over. The suspect may have been picked up by another vehicle while leaving the scene, police said.

Krug says he does plan to press charges against whoever took his car for a joyride and ruined it, “just something you dream about getting, then all of a sudden it’s gone.”

If you have any information on the crash, call the Cape Coral Police Department at 239-574-3223.
