No threat found in suspicious package left at sheriff’s substation

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Investigators determined there is no threat in a suspicious box of white powder that someone left Wednesday at the Lee County Sheriff’s Office West District substation.

It’s still unclear just what the substance inside the package is, but it poses no danger and is not a biological agent, officials said. The Fort Myers Fire Department deployed its hazardous materials team to examine the box in part because of the curious way in which it was packaged, with Chinese lettering on the outside, authorities said.

The substance has been sent away for further testing, according to the sheriff’s office.

Portions of the substation at 15650 Pine Ridge Road were evacuated during the investigation, which stretched for hours. The scene cleared before noon, and no one was hurt.

No further details were immediately available.
