FORT MYERS, Fla. — Mark Sievers is set to undergo a psychological evaluation after the judge in his high-profile murder trial granted a Department of Children and Families request.

The exam is part of the safety plan for Sievers’ daughters that prosecutors and defense debated in court during a judicial review Tuesday. The sides didn’t go into detail about the plan for the exam. Sievers is charged with first-degree murder in the bludgeoning death of his wife that took place nearly a year ago.

The judge denied a DCF request to limit phone calls between Sievers and his daughters, ages 9 and 11, and to end their ability to visit Sievers while in jail. The state agency argued that Sievers is manipulating the girls, but defense attorney Michael Mummert said no such manipulation is taking place.

The girls are in the custody of Mary Ann Groves, their maternal grandmother. Mummert accused Groves of cursing at one of the girls.
