Items found in Port Charlotte storage unit identified as fireworks

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.- The devices that prompted an evacuation Monday afternoon at American Value Self Storage, 23227 Freedom Ave., were identified as improvised, professional-grade fireworks, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office said.

The fireworks found inside the storage bin were left behind from a previous tenant, deputies said. The unit was recently auctioned off and the new owners called authorities after finding the items inside.

The fireworks found are not normally sold in stores, officials said. The scene was cleared shortly before 5:30 p.m. Monday.
