FORT MYERS, Fla. – Two among the eight candidates for chief of police in Fort Myers received the most recommendations from a citizens panel after day-long interviews Thursday.

Anthony Williams, the former chief of police of the Broward County School District, received three votes from the panel, as did Peter Newsham, the assistant chief of police of investigative services at the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department. Williams resigned from his position in February, according to media reports. Four other candidates earned at least one vote.

Panelists did not recommend two candidates: Melvin Perry, Detective Bureau Captain of the Fort Myers Police Department, and Michael Reese, from Washington, D.C. Fort Myers City Manager Saeed Kazeemi will make the final decision and is not required to heed the panel’s recommendations.
