PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — An inmate has died after intentionally plunging onto concrete decking at the Charlotte County Jail shortly after receiving a 15-year sentence, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office said.

Former Englewood resident David Franklin Szakalos, 54, was hospitalized in critical condition after his apparent suicide attempt on June 3. An investigation into his death continues, according to the sheriff’s office.

Szakalos was convicted of breaking into an elderly woman’s home and trying to attack her. He was charged with burglary and battery and given 15 years of probation on top of his jail sentence.
