Peru’s Kuczynski open to house arrest for Alberto Fujimori

LIMA, Peru (AP) – Peru’s apparent president-elect says he is open to the possibility of house arrest for imprisoned strongman Alberto Fujimori.

Pedro Pablo Kuczynski reiterated the campaign pledge in his first interview since declaring himself the victor in Sunday’s election over the imprisoned ex-president’s daughter, Keiko Fujimori.

Kuczysnki told Semana Economica in an interview published Friday that if lawmakers pass a bill giving older inmates like Fujimori the right to house arrest, he would sign it. Keiko Fujimori’s party will control congress.

Alberto Fujimori is serving 25 years for corruption and supporting death squads during his authoritarian rule in the 1990s.

Authorities said Thursday that Kuczynski won 50.1 percent of the vote. But Keiko Fujimori has yet to concede defeat and is challenging some ballots in Peru’s tightest election in decades.
