FORT MYERS, Fla. — Hundreds showed up Friday at a Gift of Life ceremony at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers to mourn the death of a 16-year-old struck and killed by a car while waiting for a school bus.

The parents of Cameron Mayhew took time to remember the positive impact he had on those around him, while a lawyer in Fort Myers believes his death will ultimately have legal consequences for the Lee County School District. North thinks the district will be sued because there aren’t signs alerting drivers to the bus stop near the corner of Pine Ridge Road and Bombay Lane where the car hit the boy, who was a student at Fort Myers High School.

“The school district is responsible for the kids from the bus stop to the school door, and then at the end of the day from the school door back to the bus stop,” North said. “But the bus stop includes all of the surrounding area at that bus stop.”

Neither the parents nor anyone connected to the case has said they will press charges against the district.

The driver of the car that hit Mayhew, 23-year-old Zackery Treinin of Cape Coral, was cited for not stopping for a school bus, authorities said. Someone who knows Treinin told WINK News that Treinin is distraught about what happened.

The parents of Mayhew expressed heartbreak and shock, but also pride about their son, who chose to become an organ donor.

“Actually when he got his permit, they asked him if he wanted to be a donor, and he said yes,” Mayhew’s mother, Sherry Stevens, said. “I looked at him and I said, ‘Are you sure?’ and he said, “Well mom if I can’t use it, let’s let someone that needs it.'”

“For such a young man to make such an adult decision just shows the how big his heart was,” father Michael Mayhew said.

That the boy would help others even after his death is in keeping with his character, Michael Mayhew said.

“Very caring,” he said of his son. “His brother was special-needs. He always helped him with homework, took care of him and, you know, he’s genuinely all-around a perfect son.”

A funeral service for Mayhew will be held at Hodges-Kiser Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 8 at 3 p.m. His friend has set up a GoFundMe to help the family pay for funeral expenses.
