FORT MYERS, Fla.- A 16-year-old was arrested for his role in a bathroom sex scandal at South Fort Myers High School that has gained national attention, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

William Scott is facing charges for cruelty towards a child, allowing a child to engage in a sexual act, and possession of obscene material for videotaping the incident, officials said.

The teen’s arrest comes more than a week after school officials began investigating claims a female student had sex with multiple males inside a bathroom after school.

The sheriff’s office and the Department of Children and Families joined the investigation after a recording of the incident began spreading through social media.

“While it is regrettable that this incident occurred in the first place, we are always committed to holding everyone responsible for their actions,” said Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott.

Five students were suspended and 11 more were disciplined for their roles in the incident, the school district said.

No further details were immediately available.
