After 2014 daycare crash, one Florida county mandates barriers

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – Commissioners in a Florida county beset by a deadly daycare crash in 2014 have voted to require new daycare centers on busy roads to have outside protective barriers that could stop oncoming vehicles.

The ordinance was passed in Orange County in response to the death of 4-year-old Lily Quintus, who was killed when a car rear-ended another vehicle, sending it careening into the daycare center where she was playing. The driver of the first vehicle was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Commissioners voted Tuesday to make up to $200,000 in grants available to daycare owners who install concrete planters or steel posts outside their premises. The Orlando Sentinel reports that existing daycare owners can each apply for up to $10,000 to add safety barriers.
