DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – A 21-month-old girl is dead and the child’s mother injured after they were struck by a driver who had been reported missing in Daytona Beach.

Daytona Beach police tell media outlets that 85-year-old Ray Beams was driving Monday when he struck a SUV, crossed over a median and drove onto a sidewalk, striking 24-year-old Christian Sims, who was pushing the baby in a stroller.

Police say the Sims and her daughter, Iris Barnes, were dragged under the car before it crashed into a tree.

The woman and the toddler were taken to the hospital, where the child died. Sims’ injures were described as serious.

Beams, who police say was reported missing and endangered in Port Orange, and the SUV driver, 63-year-old Shirley Wilson, were also injured.
