PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.- A woman was killed Thursday night when the motorcycle she was riding on was rear-ended by a vehicle, Florida Highway Patrol said.

Dianne Merando, 67, suffered fatal injuries in the crash that happened shortly before 9 p.m. on Veterans Boulevard and Norman Street.

Troopers say the victim and her husband, Gerald Merando Jr., 66, were turning right onto Norman Street when their motorcycle was struck from behind by a vehicle whose driver failed to see them slowing down.

Both were thrown from the motorcycle and landed in the roadway, authorities said.

Gerald Merando was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital in serious condition. Dianne Merando was taken to Bayfront Port Charlotte where she was later pronounced deceased.

Charges in the crash are pending as the investigation continues.
