Charlotte County medical centers earn low scores in study

Published: Updated:

PUNTA GORDA, Fla.- Medical centers in Charlotte County are earning average or below average scores in performance, according to the nonprofit company Leapfrog Group.

The hospitals were ranked for categories including infections, errors, injuries, accidents and communication with staff. Bayfront Health in Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte earned a D, while Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte got a C.

“I didn’t have a good experience with Fawcett,” said Steve Sweeney,”But Bayfront, no, I’ve talked to other people who have been there and they say the same thing, the level of service was fantastic.”

The study says Fawcett received the worst scores for the number of infections, practices to prevent errors, and hospital staff. Bayfront also scored poorly in the same categories but both hospitals did well in surgical procedures.

Bayfront says some of the information in the study is inaccurate and they’re looking out for the safety of all patients. WINK News also reached out to Fawcett Memorial for a statement but have not heard back.
