NAPLES, Fla.- The death count from Ecuador’s worst earthquake in a decade rose to at least 577 on Thursday. Government officials listed 163 people as missing and the number of those who are homeless climbed to over 23,500. Local seismologists recorded more than 550 aftershocks, with the strongest being a magnitude-6.1 aftershock on Wednesday. As rescuers continue to comb through the rubble in coastal towns hit hardest by the 7.8-magnitude quake, many of those who survived but have lost everything are now struggling with no food, water, or a roof over their heads.
