Charlotte County approves $50K in air show funding

PUNTA GORDA, Fla.- Charlotte County officials approved $50,000 to fund the Florida International Air show but it’s just a portion of the nearly $300,000 budget the show needs.

“The county funding was only part of the puzzle,” said Tyler Ezzy, air show chairman. “It was a great decision by the county commission. We are very excited about the support from the county government.”

The county says a majority of the money comes from the bed tax. Officials believe the show will be a good investment now that it has been moved from its traditional March weekend to October.

“Having an October show we’ll have those early snow birds, we’ll have some tourists,” said Dana Carr, sponsor chair for the air show. “This year was very critically important for the future of the air show, that we can come back from having shut down the air show temporarily.”

Restaurants like Hurricane Charley’s say the show is flying in when they need it most.

“I think it’s going to draw a lot of people into town on a slow month and it’s going to be great for everybody,” said Bob McCurry, manager at Hurricane Charley’s.
