Teen possibly bitten by shark near FMB Pier

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla.- A Cape Coral teenager believes he was bitten by a small shark near the Fort Myers Beach pier on Monday.

“It felt at first like a sharp pain. I didn’t think about it at first and then I looked down and there was blood,” said Nick Kawa. “We just tried to get out of the water as quickly as we could.”

Kawa’s family visiting from Chicago couldn’t believe it.

“I thought he was playing a joke on me when he first came up,” said Dave Erffmeyer, Kawa’s uncle. “I thought he had one of those Halloween kits or something so I didn’t believe him right away.”

“There was some blood next to him,” added Josh Erffmeyer, Kawa’s cousin.

There have only been seven unprovoked shark attacks in Lee County over the past 134 years, according to the University of Florida.

“I wouldn’t think that there’d be a shark swimming that close,” said Kennedy Cross who was in the water with Kawa at the time.

Kawa’s doctor believes the teen was bitten by a nurse shark. His bite has not gotten infected and the teen is doing okay.
