Charlotte County’s McGuire Park due for a million-dollar upgrade

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.- Charlotte County is considering spending more than $1 million to upgrade McGuire Park and get rid of its crime-ridden reputation.

“Sometimes there is a misperception about an area so we want to encourage people to come out and enjoy that site,” said Debrah Forester, Charlotte County redevelopment manager.

Crews plan to make the park an oasis for kids and adults, ripping out the worn tennis courts and adding an area for skate boarders, pickle ball players, and a splash pad.

“I’m actually happy that they are thinking about putting more stuff into Charlotte County,” said James Priddy. “Making it safer is basically what everybody wants.”

The park’s playground will also be redone with new bathrooms installed and enhanced lighting for extra security.

The makeover comes with a hefty price tag which will be paid for through sales tax dollars, the county said.

“It’s pretty cool,” said Lisa Velez. “We just found out how much it gonna cost, now that’s a surprise.”

The county says the project is expected to begin in October and should be completed by the end of 2017.
