FORT MYERS, Fla. – A late Monday fatal wreck on Summerlin Road has been upgraded to a homicide, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

Friedrich “Fritz” Dirk Timmermann, 43, suffered a “fatal wound” before crashing into a concrete retainer wall.

The incident closed the roadway in both directions between Maple Road and College Parkway until early Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities spent Tuesday morning combing the area and going into nearby neighborhoods, looking for evidence possibly related to an overnight shooting.

Hunter Park residents, in the Pine Manor neighborhood, say they heard multiple gunshots around 8:30 p.m.- 9 p.m. on Monday.

“It always concerns you, especially when it’s a little too close comfort but it can happen in any neighborhood,” a woman named Julie said.

Investigators have not said whether Timmermann was killed by gunfire.

Drivers said they could have been affected in the wreck.

“He’s driving along and crashed into a wall. It could have been me and my grandson driving along and he smashed into us you know,” a driver, Tony Vetter, said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 239-477-1000 or CrimeStoppers at 800-780-TIPS.
